Bread and circus.
It’s estimated that 4.000 extras participated in the shooting of “Intolerance”. Some were alcoholics, others poor and others beggars who lived on the streets of Los Angeles. They were paid 2 dollars for each working day and they appeared as Babylonians and Persians. But they didn’t make things easy for filmmaker David Wark. Faced with suffocating heat that accompanied the filming they would take off their fake beards to place them on their foreheads, even when they were filming. They didn’t obey orders from the technical department and fought amongst themselves, sometimes using prop weapons that had been provided in the studio for their characters. In one day alone of filming 67 injuries were counted due to knives.
